Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D.

The Ethics Guy

Bruce Weinstein, Ph.D., The Ethics Guy, has a simple purpose in life: He wants to enrich your appreciation of ethics in everyday life and to help you make the best decisions possible. He writes the column, "Ask the Ethics Guy," for BusinessWeek.com.

Lie, Cheat, and Steal Your Way to Success! What Would the World Be Like Without Ethics?

Dr. Weinstein begins by presenting four ethical dilemmas faced by members of your group. Each dilemma will have four possible responses. He'll ask for a show of hands for each response and then ask several audience members to explain why they made the selection they did. The purpose is not to criticize any particular choice but simply to get everyone involved in the discussion.

Dr. Weinstein then presents the five fundamental principles of ethics that have stood the test of time and that are the foundation of every organization, every culture, and even every religious tradition:

1. Do No Harm
2. Make Things Better
3. Respect Others
4. Be Fair
5. Be Loving

He calls these "life principles," because they provide a road map to living a good life. He will explain the origin of these principles.

He concludes by showing how these five principles point us in the right direction in each of the four scenarios that he and the audience discussed at the beginning of the presentation.

"What Should I Do?" 4 Simple Steps to Making Better Decisions

In the keynote address, Dr. Weinstein and the audience examined five fundamental ethical principles that are the foundation for doing the right thing in our professional and personal lives. He will now present a 4-step protocol for making the right decisions anywhere, anytime.

A detailed (but fictitious) case study will be the basis for this portion of the program. The case study presents a difficult ethical dilemma facing members of your organization. At the end of the case study, the person faced with the dilemma asks, "What should I do?"

Dr. Weinstein will then ask the group the following four questions:

1. What are the facts?
2. What values are at stake? In other words, to whom does the decision maker have an ethical responsibility?
3. What could the decision maker do? That is, what are all of the options?
4. What should he or she do, and why?

This straightforward protocol helps one work through a difficult situation with clarity and to arrive at a decision that takes the interests of all into account.

An individual writing exercise is the final portion of the breakout session. Each participant will use the 4-step process for ethical decision making to work through a problem he or she is now facing. Several volunteers will present their dilemmas to the group and benefit from its collective wisdom.
